Chronic Pain Doesn’t Have to Be “Your Life Now”: How Acupuncture Can Help
Book a visit
How often have you been told, “this is your life now, you’ll just have to deal with it”?
It’s hard to feel handed off by the people you trust to help you. It’s not that your providers don’t care, because they do. But when pain sticks around, the options can start to feel limited.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), our goal is to understand what’s driving your pain and build a plan to help you move, sleep, and live with more ease. We work with you to set goals and get you back to the passions and hobbies you love.
You shouldn’t have to choose between doing what you love and recovering from it. We want to help you garden, hike, play with your kids, or whatever brings you joy, without the flare-up that follows.
What does the research say?
The strongest evidence is for acupuncture. A large analysis of high-quality studies, covering nearly 18,000 patients, found that acupuncture reduced chronic pain from back and neck problems, osteoarthritis, and headaches. It worked better than no treatment, and also better than “sham” acupuncture, which suggests it’s more than a placebo. A follow-up analysis found that the benefits lasted over time.
Acupuncture is also recognized by mainstream medicine. The American College of Physicians’ guideline for chronic low back pain recommends starting with non-drug treatments, including acupuncture, exercise, and mindfulness-based stress reduction.
Other ways we can support you
Acupuncture is just one tool. Depending on your needs, we may also use:
- Cupping and gua sha: In TCM, pain is seen as a sign that Qi (your body’s vital energy) and blood aren’t flowing smoothly. These hands-on techniques are used to encourage that flow and ease tight, sore areas. Research on these is still limited, so we use them as part of a larger plan rather than on their own.
- Tuina: A form of Chinese medical massage that combines kneading, pressing, rolling, and gentle stretching to release muscle tension and help you move more comfortably.
- Herbal therapy: Individualized formulas to support pain management and related symptoms like poor sleep or stress. Please tell us about any medications or supplements you take so we can keep your care safe and coordinated.

Putting it together
Acupuncture isn’t a magic fix. It works best as part of a bigger picture that may include movement, stress management, and working alongside your doctor. But it may be just what you need to start getting back to your life, one step at a time.
